The 7 Days/6 nights Rwanda gorilla safari takes you to volcanoes national park, Nyungwe Forest National Park and Akagera National Park. The basic safari activity spotted in the 7 days road trip to Rwanda include gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, wildlife viewing in Akagera National Park and Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest National Park.
You start off with the Genocide memorial museum in Kigali. The country is incredibly inspiring and learning about their recent history and seeing the country and talking to locals afterward is extremely important. You can take full night in Kigali and take a city tour, as well as do the fabulous cooking class that Self-drive can arrange with the local women’s center.
From Kigali you can drive to Akagera where you will experience the African wildlife, birds, boat cruise along Lake Ihema, thereafter return to the lodge and check in. While on the lodge, you will feel the sounds of jungle since the lodge is in the middle of the bush and overlooking Lake Ihema. You can also decide to camp if you wish.
The next day you go for the whole day game drive experience, getting up close to wildlife in Akagera National Park, you will exit the park at Northern Nyungwe gate and proceed to Volcanoes National Park through Byumba. During the game drive to the north of the park, you will go through different topography but most interesting part of it is the crocodile swimming pool and the Kilala valley with large concentration of wildlife as you get nearly to the Nyungwe exit gate.
Transfer to Volcanoes for mountain gorilla experience. Traverse to Kinigi park headquarters for trekking briefing and then hike up into the rain forest to a troop of magnificent mountain gorillas. Each troop has its own 24-hour guard, so their location is known, you usually have an hour with them, time to sit and observe them at very close quarters indeed. After the day experience return back to the Lodge for your overnight.
After an early morning breakfast transfer back to the park headquarters at Kinigi to go for golden monkey tracking experience. These primates are beautiful, endangered and more limber than the mountain gorillas. They live in bamboo thickets on the lower slopes of the mountains – and tracking them adapt you perfectly to the slight altitude, marking your last views of the park’s environs, and this will be followed by a a visit to IbyI’wacu cultural village in the afternoon.
Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park for chimpanzee tracking experience. Drive through spectacular scenery to Nyungwe Forest National Park in Rwanda’s mountainous southwest. The rain forest within the park is home to chimpanzees and monkeys, plus an abundance of bird life and butterflies.
A guided hike through the dense forest of Nyungwe National Park to track chimpanzees. This is a remarkable wildlife experience that is at par with gorilla trekking. Whilst the trek is undoubtedly exciting, it can be challenging as the chimps are very mobile and they’re always running around in the canopies, on the move from one place to another.
During your time in Nyungwe Forest National Park, you’ll also have an opportunity to cross the canopy walkway, a 200-meter bridge suspended between giant trees, 50 meters above the forest. The walkway offers incredible views of the upper canopy and it is excellent for spotting wildlife. Many of the primates live in trees so you will have better chances of locating them from the walkway. It is also a fantastic way to see the birds and butterflies that are found in the forest.
Depart Nyungwe and head to your next accommodation which is located on the white sandy shores of Lake Kivu. Here you can relax on the stunning palm-fringed beaches, kayak on the calm waters of the lake, take a boat tour to the nearby islands or coffee and banana plantations. You can also hike in the surrounding hills or visit Imbabazi Orphanage. Next day drive back to Kigali and depart for your flight back home.
